The Enterprise Center works closely with Hamilton County Schools on a number of programs aimed at making both basic and advanced technology available to students of all levels.
Data show that students need digital literacy skills, devices, and home internet to be successful in school. While we support programs to address those needs, such as Tech Goes Home and HCS EdConnect, we also believe that giving students access to high-tech tools more fully prepares them for careers of the future.
Working with community partners and various funders, The Enterprise Center installed a high-powered 4K microscope at STEM School Chattanooga in 2018, with support from the National Science Foundation, US Ignite, and in collaboration with the Annenberg Lab at The University of Southern California. The microscope, usually found only in high-level labs such as the CDC’s, allows students to study environmental or biomedical samples under incredible magnification, unlocking a hidden world. Thanks to our community’s fiber optic network, students at more than half a dozen Hamilton County Schools have remote access to the microscope and are able to zoom and manipulate samples from afar, giving them unparalleled access to deeply explore samples from the natural world.
Lola : Bringing students and teachers together.
The Enterprise Center has also led the implementation of LoLa, another gig-powered technology used by Hamilton County Schools. LoLa allows students at separate schools to come together, virtually, in artistic collaboration. For instance, music students in separate classrooms across the county can play a song together, as if they were in the same room, thanks to LoLa’s low-latency fiber optic connection. Not only does the tool allow students to come together, but likewise educators have a unique opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the county. gig-powered connection.
“We don’t know what the careers of tomorrow will be. So, the more we embed technology into the learning, the more prepared they are going to be to go out and be successful."
